Apparently they had to magdump their Patriot intercepter missiles, but why? And what about the offensive missiles? What happened?

Mao was right when he called them a paper tiger - they project strength but in reality all the factories that would have produced the war time missiles now exist in China.

And China's control of rare earth processing is adding a further bite. Even as it tries, on paper, to boost manufacturing capabilities, it will be limited by material reality.
