I'm far more surprised by the number of people thinking they couldn't win a fight against a rat, house cat, goose, medium sized dog or an eagle. I highly doubt anyone genuinely thinks they'd die if they got attacked by a rat which just leads me to believe that a significant number of people polled here did not understand the assignment.

Depends on your definition of "win the fight". Do we fight to the death or until someone retreats? Does it count as a win if I die after the fight? If not, does any nonlethal level of injury constitute a loss? There's room for interpretation here.

(Also, I have no real idea of how much damage a determined eagle could do to me and I'm in no hurry to find out.)

Not much. While it could certainly hurt you, the second you grab it, it's over. These things weigh a few kilos at best. You just grab it by its feet and bang it against a rock.

A lot of people have rat phobias, maybe? Or it doesn't feel like a "fight" when you can throw the creature into a wall? I could win an unarmed fight against a beetle, but it feels weird to describe it that way.

The only information we have about the pool is the that some adults where asked. We don’t know ~~the exact questions and~~ who those adults are. But considering the rather old population, I think the UK even older than the US, this could also reflect in the outcome. A person who is barely able to walk, probably won’t be able to fight even a rat.
