The Western Sahara is an oil rich region populated by an indigenous Berber population that is subjugated by the Moroccan state.

The vast deposits of oil and minerals made the region a prime target of colonization by Spain and later Francoist Spain, and the Moroccan state vehemently opposes any self determination as the region generates billions in profit.

At least 40% of Moroccans are Amazigh who speak an Amazigh language as their mother tongue and are recognized as an official language in Morocco. The Sahrawi people are nomads with Arab and Amazigh ancestry who speak a dialect of Arabic known as Hassaniya that is more mutually intelligible with Peninsular dialects than elsewhere in the Maghreb. SADR recognizes Arabic and Spanish as official languages.

To me this is conflict is a left over of colonialism. Historically it and Mauritania and Morocco were part of the same realm with undefined borders and shifting alliances. Now either outcome is terrible. Rule under a corrupt Zionist puppet monarch, or half of Morocco a weak state of less than a quarter million people.

Why would the Western Sahara be a weak state? The nation is largely socialist owing to centuries of subjugation with strong ties to Cuba and China who could provide substantial assistance and protection in exchange for access to the vast mineral and oil wealth of the nation.

Further, the population is low due to purposeful campaigns by the Moroccan government to dispossess and discourage the indigenous population from reproducing and presenting a larger threat to Moroccan rule.

Self determination has always been and continues to be the best option.

And Mauritania has its own issues with anti-blackness and suppressing the mandé indigenous ethnic groups, Char Bouba war and all that.

Huh I've never heard Amazigh before. I hope it catches on soon because it's a cooler name.
