Why not Lemmy? I think it's way better than reddit. Unfortunately it lacks enough users. I don't think starting from scratch will offer a better solution.
Lemmy is also nerdy as fuck. Half of what is on here is Linux/selfhosting/AI tech bro nonsense. The average person has no interest in niche tech subs.

There were a lot more bio, history, and astrology nerds, too.
Perhaps that's the crowd we should attract next. I'd read their posts
I have been on Reddit for a long long time.
Niche subreddits were the only worthwhile thing there. Lemmy completley superseded it in terms of FOSS. Other niches can follow.

In my experience if you start a niche community and tend to it then people will eventually come and start filling it. Not as much as on the mainstreams but still enough.
Isnt that the usual initial userbase? Your average person probably doesn't go around trying new platforms.
It really isnt better than reddit unfortunately. But it depends what you are looking for. If you want to find a replacement for a popular reddit community here, you are out of luck most of the time. But if you are happy with memes, you will like this place. Its chill and relaxed and has humor and no algorithms.

That's because people haven't moved not because the tech isn't good enough, just need the right instance and some advertising
that's what makes it better. more communities would be easier to solve than on a brand new platform that doesn't have any already.
it may lack the same number of users, that's true but it means it's largely bot and wanker free which is nice it may be slower but thats not a bad thing
It's too complicated. People just wanna go to lemmy.com, sign up, and experience Reddit 2.0.
So why not go to lemmy.world and have that experience?
The funny thing is that when I go to lemmy.com, the first thing I see is a box with a button that I can click to sign up:

I guess because of server costs and stuff like that. I am sure Lemmy currently can't handle the amount users Reddit has. And without ads there is no income stream of money to handle the costs.
