Yeah Bubba and his gun ain’t doing shit to watchdog the government. In fact I’m quite certain that the government is the only thing keeping Bubba from killing ME with his gun and moving into my house because he feels like it.
And the people yelling “come and take it” while waving “don’t tread on me” flags voted the tyrants in.

There's a DLC for Assassin's Creed III called The Tyranny of King Washington, exploring an alternate reality with a corrupt president. Not so wild a theory now
I encourage you to read up on prior presidents if you think Trump is some kind of anomaly.
Trump is still an anomaly. It's been bad, but this is something else entirely. He is simultaneously the dumbest, most evil, and most corrupt President, and it's not even close.
He commits new acts worse than Watergate multiple times a week.
Maybe I do need to read up on US Presidential history, but as my knowledge stands right now I'd say that, aside from only two or three presidents, every leadership has been progressive in some form. Every one except Trump and a couple others has objectively improved something for the majority of the public. Mr. Orange is, if anything, proof of de-evolution.
Neo-liberalism has brought us here, it's designed to slowly ratchet us toward another authoritarian state. Because you cannot dare mar the sanctity of the "Free Market" you have to sacrifice at its altar everything else.
All they had to do was teach them that tyranny looks like a bunch of brown people having jobs.
