Its so funny when tankies call anyone who dislikes them liberals. Figuring out what the word "tankie" actually means was, ironically, one of the things that made me turn away from liberals and centrists. Once I realized that communists had a derogatory term for other, dipshit communists, I realized I knew nothing about communism and leftism as a whole and should probably reconsider what I thought I knew. I still am no scholar, but I've learned a lot in the past few years and I'm really proud of myself. I still consider that word as one of the reasons my political awakening played out the way it did.

So when I see people, especially people who fit it's definition, intentionally muddy it and claim anyone who uses the word is a damn lib, it really pisses me off. Its so disingenuous and just confuses people who are in the position I was, trying to figure it tf out.

Yes, that's the goal.

Yeah, I dipped my toes into marxism and anarchism this year and am about ankle deep down by now. The more I read the more I cringe at people I see here. It is heartbreaking. All that nonsense spewed out nonchalantly like they know everything. It costs you nothing to be nice. And even if you disagree cite something for the others to read on if you think you know it all. And read books most importantly.

i hope mamdani, DSA in NY project works well

will it descend into magical thinking/authoritarian behaviour? we'll see. his bodega project seems like the kind of thing that could really backfire. he just wants cheaper staples but the knock-on effects and management of this project will not be easy

and will the ~~theorists~~ fantasists come out with the usual excuses if it fails?

Tankie isn't a communist invention, it's brittish IIRC ?

[-] Zgierwoj@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 9 hours ago

You know there were british communists? It was a term for people that defended USSR breaking the Hungarian uprising with tanks, hence the name. A modern day tankie even told me that everyone killed by those tanks was a nazi, actually

Yeah I know.

And of course, everyone killed by glorious leaders is of course by definition bad!! /s

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
