There is also moodle.
Canvas and moodle are really popular in schools and universities.
I was forced to endure it for some time in the past. Would not wish it for my worst enemy to use Moodle
What made moodle frustrating?
I have also heard the opposite take, that canvas sucks and moodle is great.
Did you use it as a student/user, or as an administrator?
Educator here. The text editor is awful. E.g. the font size in the paragraph font style selection isn't consistent. Type text without changing font size -> c/p text from other source, select 'normal' paragraph style to match the initial style of my typed text -> font size differs. So the font size used as standard isn't the same as the normal paragraph style. Also moving content on a course is slow and drag/drop only. Often you have to drag an item to the top of the, only to drop in something in between, scroll up/down in the browser, repeat.
User experience wise, Canvas > Moodle easily
I didn't know Canvas was open source, that's cool
