Johnny Depp playing Johnny Depp in Johnny Depp Movie XII: Same Guy Again
For ages I've been meaning to watch Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man (1995), in which Johnny Depp plays the main character. It's pretty… interesting…? how Dead Man is considered to be very good in its representation of Indigenous people, especially for a film not directed by an Indigenous person^[I only first became aware of Dead Man because clips of it are used in the music video for The Halluci Nation's "Electric Pow Wow Drum", which also samples audio from the film.]; and then not even twenty years later, Johnny Depp went on to don redface as Tonto in Disney's The Lone Ranger (2013), which was, uhh, not as good representation?
dead man is pretty good, moody, cool, but it's a jarmusch movie so it's very slow and has long asides of side characters having improvised dialogue about nothing in particular that goes nowhere (but less so than other jarmusch movies). gary farmer is very good in it. johnny depp is okay, it's early arty johnny depp. crispin glover and robert mitchum are in it for 2 minutes each (in separate scenes) and are more memorable than depp.
How was Tonto not good native representation? Johnny Depp wears feathers on his leather jacket irl all the time. I saw him do a perfume commercial in the desert for a brand called "Sauvage" where he dressed like an injun!

As long as the character is Johnny Depp wearing his Johnny Depp Character Wig, he's great at it.

It says a lot about how we view acting that our most famous actors are just moderately attractive people instead of people who are actually good at acting
I think a big part of this is also that Hollywood execs demand predictability, so an actor who always plays the exact same guy is actually the perfect fit for the slop factory.
A lot of it is aesthetics and popularity over talent
