To play devil's advocate, there are no exposed blades at the point of use. I'd wager people who buy "bladeless" fans are more concerned with aesthetics and avoiding a crying toddler than they are with semantic accuracy. We call Wi-Fi "wireless" even though the router is plugged in.

    I can stick my peepee into a bladeless fan and not worry about cuts so there's that.

    Regular fans dont have exposed blades either, there is a mesh over it.

    Yes, I saw. The holes are small enough for an adult and far away from the blades for a toddler that it is safe.

    The cage had many iterations, the density of the cage increased and so the distance of the cage from the propeller. The propeller got replaced with a plastic one with rounded edges (though probably to save cost not as much for safety), so even if the cage is removed and you touch the propeller it isn't that dangerous.

    I don't know what country you are in, and it is possible that in some place there might be dangerous fans, but if you can buy the bladeless Dyson, then chances are that stores also sell only modern fans, unless you're purposefully buying an antique somewhere.

    at work we have expensive fans with a cheap metal mesh around them - to avoid a crying co-worker. at home i have a cheap tower fan with a weird plastic mesh - there are no visible blades on it except if i crank my neck into a really uncomfortable position and shine a flashlight into it. which one of the two can i call bladeless?

    luckily i already have a devils advocate and @arctanthrope@lemmy.world dropped the name of god. how well do i need to hide my fans blade to create a Ventilationbescheißerle?
