Amanda Knox and stand-up comedy are likely two phrases that don’t go together for most people. Almost 20 years ago, Knox was in the spotlight in connection with a salacious murder mystery in Italy. Now, she’s on the stage in a one-woman standup show called “Cartwheel,” and her public and private story, which she explores and ponders, is getting laughs.

Back in November of 2007, no one was laughing when Knox, a University of Washington student spending a year abroad in Italy, was arrested in connection with the violent death of her roommate, Meredith Kercher.

Twenty years old at the time, Knox became the focus of an international media frenzy. Over the months that followed, she was prosecuted and convicted of murder. She spent nearly four years in prison before being set free and later exonerated.

I really liked this quote from her:

“I've always been drawn to comedy, and I've always appreciated gallows humor. And I think that that was actually weaponized against me early on. Very early on in the case, I wasn't processing everything the way everyone around me was. I wasn't just, like, falling into a heap and crying. I had these moments of being totally disassociated, and then other moments where I was writing in my journal about how I was dying for a slice of pizza, but that felt wrong to say now,” she said. “I was just processing all of this pain and this surreality, frankly, all around me, and people weaponized that against me. And it certainly scared me away from self-expression for a long time.”

“They associate me with tragedy, and so they want me to sort of walk around the world wearing this veil of mourning for the rest of my life, and that's not who I am,” Knox said. “That's never who I have been. I actually am somebody who's very silly and light-hearted and tries to see the absurdity and the positivity in things.”
