I think that they just wanted to kill Sora, and I don't particularly blame them.

But another Sora will appear, so it's like spending billions to kill one mob boss in an effort to end crime.

They didn’t want to kill Sora. They wanted to license it.

AFAIK Disney was the one with plans to use it extensively, but OpenAI is the one who decided to kill it.
