Back in my day we used to do that with computer to computer connections over serial ports. Ah good times. Multiplayer used to take a lot of work.

Ahh the good ol’ null-modem.

I forgot that term! I feel like I was usually doing IPX when doing the null modem thing. But my memory is quite foggy on that

I remember when I was in middle school having my friend bring his Mac Color classic over, and connecting it to mine with a null modem so we could play multiplayer Marathon.

The old Xbox to Xbox with no router blew a younger friends mind.

I tried explaining without a LAN DHCP server it sets up default IPs and a crossover connection using using the Simlink lets them sort out communication directly IP to IP.

I started mentioning Auto IPs 169.254.x.x used when you connect direct and want to telnet into something.

But at that point he's like Its making my brain hurt.

I wonder if they were ever in the IPv4 design stage talking like, "yeah of course we'll probably never see more than 256 connected computers, but let's play for way more than that! Let's just make it 32 bit so we're safe for a century at least. And we'll probably have moved off of IP long before then."
