Meanwhile UK has one of the best in the world. Any full time job is easy to live off as you get plenty.

Most of western europe is euivalent to the uk. Proces still hurt but the social safety net is better and the onky prices ge erally affected sre groceries and rent. America, a largr expense increase is insirance and health costs, too.

In the UK at least food is really cheap. But housing costs an absolute fortune in comparison.

[-] Flower@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Because housing is still allowed to be ~~a plaything~~ an investment for the (foreign) rich.

More than that, they make living in a temporary structure nearly impossible to do legally.

Why do I need their fucking permission to live in a cabin out in the woods. I could build the cabin completely legally, the only part I can't do legally is live in it.

Because industrialists at the beginning of the industrial revolution lobbied for private land ownership to push out common land ownership so people couldn't eek out a subsistence life and were forced to work in factories in deplorable circumstances.

This isn't even common land, you can own the land and it's still illegal.

Easy to live off? Is the cost of living really that low in the UK? Cos 12,71£ equals 14,77€ and having such a wage in germany might let u pay the bills, but not much more than that. And it would surprise me if the cost of living in germany is that much higher in the UK.

Only pretty recently started earning noticeably more than minimum wage (29k), honestly I don't even know what to spend my money on.

Saving for retirement, maybe? For example, I am investing 500 Euros per month into ETFs and Gold.

State pension is better than minimum wage + mortgage, at least it was back when I calculated it while I was on minimum wage and with the triple lock pension its only going to get better by the time I retire.

All I need to do is pay off my mortgage which should be done shortly before I can retire. Maybe drop down to part time at that point.
