I'm no expert on this but my understanding is both are correct terms here, and the terms are not mutually exclusive. If you're bisexual you're gay because you're capable of being into the same sex and that qualifies you to identify as gay. If you're gay and attracted to the opposite sex aswell then you're bi of course.

As heterosexuality is the default or the norm, it means it works more as something you disqualify from for not being only into the opposite sex, so you can't be straight when you're bisexual. I guess it's like how half-back people can say theyre mixed or black but usually not white if theyre noticeably not strictly racially white to others.

Confusing identity stuff basically. And as the other replies stated gay can also mean anyone LGBTQ+ in some cases.
