Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Now I'm sure that post-Maduro Venezuela is completely capitulating to USA, no other way to interpret that.
It wasn’t them redirecting oil to Israel instead of Cuba? Or them opening their markets to US companies and investors? Or them signing up for IMF style structural adjustments and austerity programs?
It’s interesting how hard it is to get communists to see when a socialist state is going full revisionist, considering it’s the number one danger and cause of death of revolutions but so many are blinded to it as it begins. Some kind of denial and psychological defense mechanism maybe? Invested too much into defense of the specific state government instead of the principles of socialism?
The success of China has basically broken the brains of some MLs (Dengists) who believe now that rightwing revisionism is not only fine, but necessary. China was a fluke due to its sovereignty due to size and nukes, combined with the opportunistic timing of absorbing US and Soviet industrial capacity as both mutually deindustrialized at the end of the Cold War. Stop thinking it’s a repeatable model. Other nations won’t be able to handle the forces of imperialist capital as they are too small and will be colonized, as we have always seen in IMF takeovers and neoliberalization. Even China got dangerously close to completely abandoning socialism, we really should not be embracing the “Dengist model” as a standard for general socialist use. It’s a defense mode and retreat and comes with huge risks and costs, and should only be done carefully by powerful large states as a last resort.
The more they give to the US the more the US demands.
It was already very suspicious, but this is completely undeniable proof of capitulation.
It's so disheartening. There's no way to spin handing over your own people, who you not long ago got back in a prisoner swap. You can't say "Free Maduro but imprison this other guy". And the way they lied about why they're doing it. I want to hear what Jorge Arreaza has to say about it.
So depressing. Until China can extend its reach across the globe like the USSR used to be able to do or the US, then it looks like the left in the US's hemisphere is doomed.
Not true at all, they just have to at least engage in struggle against the USA. The US does not have the military capacity to occupy and control the entire American continents.
Look at the general strikes in Bolivia that are causing the neoliberal government to collapse. America can’t do anything about it except complain and sanction, and Bolivia is a tiny country compared to others.
Venezuela was already rotting from the inside and the revolution was never completed, so there were many powerful comprador factions with capital and state influence. A united workers movement throughout South and Central America could not be stopped by the failing empire. It only took one spec op to completely takeover the Venezuelan government, that shows they were weak and on the brink already. Incomplete electoral revolutions are weak though, as they leave powerful reactionary opposition factions in tact that the US can leverage. The revolutions will need to be complete and violent.
the CPC will never do anything good outside their own borders. their project is building a prosperous society in china and the well being of people outside china will never be as important to them as maintaining the status quo in which they're achieving their goals and the US is killing itself. sticking their neck out to help the venezuelas of the world simply doesn't make sense for them
They saw what the empire did to the USSR for trying to export the revolution.
Im pretty sure china can indeed do that presently
Chinese libs: "but at what cost?"
Leftists are the losers of history. The best we can do is just keep going, I guess.
And yet we keep pushing the train of history forward. Throwing our bodies onto the pile, upon which humanity climbs up to the better future.
