They might replace him with someone competent.
Few can match his weird charisma with the masses, even if they can better bend the government to their will. When strongman leaders die, they are notoriously hard to replace, so considering how Trump has torn down anyone with independent popularity while filling his administration with weaklings like Vance, the party will not stay in power without him. Even much of the right will be sick of the state of the economy, despite their unwillingness to admit that it was all their fault. This wave of fascism will die with Trump, and that's why nobody has succeeded in replace him over the last decade.
Besides, I think the oligarchs will want more stability after he's gone, and with the Democrats getting more corrupt every year, placing them in power will be a no brainer. Foolish liberals will believe whatever bullshit they're sold about "rebuilding our democracy" and "swinging the pendulum back," while some Gavin Newsom like corporat will be chosen as the next king. With the rise of China as the dominant superpower, they'll sell everyone on anticommunist bullshit that'll win over many of fascists that used to follow Trump. They'll likely continue throwing minorities like trans people and immigrants under the bus, but they'll be nicer about it and dress it up as "serious concerns" to give plausible deniability to people who thought Trump only went too far.
If that's what you mean by replace him with someone competent, then maybe you're correct. However, that'll be a distinctly different stage to what we have right now, and it likely won't last either for the very same reason that neoliberalism led to fascism in the first place.
At this point, most of Trump's inner circle can't risk a return to rule of law. Without a Republican president securing pardons, many people in power can get jailed.
Strongmen are hard to replace, but that creates power struggles within the inner circle rather than a calm return to liberal democracy.
Project 2025 was written and executed competently because of people other than Trump. There will be a Project 2029, a similar step towards autocracy.
With Google replacing its search with AI and similar substitutions being made across media, the information that people will be consuming >90% of the time will be malleable everywhere all at the same time in the same way.
Those data centers popping up everywhere aren't being built for nothing, they want AI to be so plentiful as to suffuse everything, so that events can simply be hallucinated into or out of existence, and you can't tell the difference between Mandela Effect, Memory Hole, or genuine change in available evidence.
This is why tech company leaders were put in the most prominent position during the inauguration; it is through them that the post-truth state of a stable fascist regime will be accomplished.
They can't let this project go to waste. They've invested trillions in this, committed countless felonies, and burned bridges with allies and economic partners across the world. Either they continue to commit or their ambitions collapse forever.
There will not be a successful power struggle because of the person JD Vance is. He will take office after Trump, but unlike him, he will actually be a puppet to oligarchs with no agency. The biggest lie people tell themselves about Trump is the he has handlers and is totally controlled by other people. However, if the rich actually wanted an obedient puppet, they would've chosen literally anyone else. They support Trump because only he could give them so much, but Trump is a dangerous person they'd rather have without. He has irreplaceable political support, while Vance is a weak yes man who will follow whatever his beneficiaries want.
They will demand elections, not because they want to return to genuine liberal democracy, but because they'll want the stability and support for the system liberal democracy brings. If Vance somehow wins even with the increasingly toxic MAGA brand and his lack of charisma, they'll get more of what they want. If Democrats win, they'll get a corrupt goon who will repeal none of Trump's changes that actually benefit them, while throwing a few bones to social progressives.
A new Democratic administration would not be a return to the past, but a chance for them to solidify policy changes with more popular support. The next Republican administration doesn't have to worry about pardons because the weak ass Democrats will never do a fucking thing beyond the bare minimum for revenge. They'll be too busy attacking the left for being China loving communists. All the while, the things taken away will fade from political memory, and people will get used to our new cyberpunk dystopia.
But that's not all!
While a lot of oligarchs do want a more conservative social order, they want money and economic control more. They've already won big, and a number of changes like abortion access and anti trans bigotry are unlikely to reverse course. They're taking such a big chunk out of our civil rights that even if half of them were restored, they'll still have won enough to keep them satiated for now. Even better, as the Democrats once again prove to be ineffectual and weak, they'll be able to sell fascism as the solution once more.
You over estimate AI and propaganda's ability to create stability. People having shit material conditions will always create instability that the oligarchs need to lean into to maintain control. Them having a Democrat win an election is not them losing anything, but all part of their plan. We aren't in for a stable authoritarian government where the people are made poorer and more powerless every year. That just isn't possible and never has been. China is strong now because they made their country wealthy and powerful, while the Soviet Union collapsed because they made member states bitter and squeezed their people for no meaningful benefit. Now the US will follow the Soviet Union into the graveyard of empires, and it will probably be even less pretty than that era was for them
