Mike Banks, President Donald Trump’s top Border Patrol official, resigned from the position on Thursday, “effective immediately.”

Banks’ departure from the Border Patrol comes under the cloud of sex tourism allegations against him.

Several current and former border patrol agents told the Washington Examiner last month that Banks “bragged” about having sex with prostitutes in countries that included Colombia and Thailand.

What is “sex tourism”? I feel like it is a phrase that sugar coats what he actually did.

going to other countries with lower age of consent laws to fuck children.

Notable the two countries mentioned, Thailand's age of consent is 15. Colombia's is 14. One can only speculate about the other countries he solicited sex in.

These are not kids in school, btw. They’re slaves sold for rape.

Not that republicans have any problems with raping kids. In fact, their golden leader is king of kid rape. So maybe it’s like he said; he just wanted to retire. Maybe do some travel.

Canada's age is 16, irrelevant because we don't fuck children.

Canada's consent laws are also more nuanced than just a bottom age:

A 14 or 15 year old can consent to sexual activity as long as the partner is less than five years older and there is no relationship of trust, authority or dependency or any other exploitation of the young person

A 16 or 17 year old cannot consent to sexual activity if:

  • their sexual partner is in position of trust or authority towards them, for example their teacher or coach

  • the young person is dependent on their sexual partner, for example for care or support

  • the relationship between the young person and their sexual partner is exploitative

sauce

Wow. Leave it to Canada to make common sense sex laws. I've heard way too many stories of lives being ruined (i.e. incarceration and sex registry) because two people with a wide age gap but a genuine love for each other let their hormones get the better of them.

Some US states are also like this. Often limits on the types of relationships and a low age of consent (16, say, but with a harder limit on how many months there can be between the parties).

There are a lot of people who are against the kind of predation that is lauded amongst the vile and the wealthy.

Thailand’s age of consent is 15. Colombia’s is 14.

That's insane.

[-] dustyData@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

That's not the issue, though. The age of consent is a scape goat to distract from the actual source of the sex tourism problem. Colombia's laws for example are on par with the Canadian example quoted above. Yes the age of consent is technically 14, but there's a ton of nuance, like access to sexual rights (which was a big issue, like contraceptives and medical care). As well as strict rules regarding no more than 5 years of age gap.

The real problem is that both Thailand and Colombia have armed criminal groups controlling large swaths of territory where they engage in drug and human trafficking. With both, forced and sex labor intentions. Effective modern day slavery, due to a complex web of factors that make establishing the rule of law very hard. They're far from the only ones, tons of countries all over the world suffer from this issue regardless of age of consent.

Going places to have sex with the people there. Not necessarily to abuse children, but in this administration it's a fair assumption

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.cafe 5 points 4 days ago

If you just want to have sex with hookers, you can do that in America. You leave the country for more...exotic...adventures.
