To my eyes the closest leg of the stool appears to be sitting inside the brazier, and the brazier is underneath the stool. The front two legs of the stool are doing that thing where one appears to be further back on the seat, but the leg contacts the floor closer to the viewer. The thing should fall over.

Yup, if you pay attention to the light and shadows on the chair legs it breaks that illusion.

I do think it's that smoke that allows us to see the chair legs as going into the brazier, instead of being well behind it.
