I didn't know NTR was in the western anime fan vocabulary. Did they make anime about cuckoldry or something?
Western anime fandom is defined in large part by porn addiction, and NTR is the preferred tag for that content on hentai sites.
I got the impression that the word wasn't widely known among the general population of Japan. I only heard about it through straight men coming into online Japanese language gay kink communities.
That wouldn't surprise me, it might be more well known in the West as a loanword than in Japan lol

Maybe. There was also an incident when a sign for trains to Narita airport, which has the code NRT, was mistakenly written as NTR, and the fact that they didn't notice and that it didn't get much attention made me think it wasn't a commonly known word there.
