I don't think anyone here is going to defend the historical record of the Catholic church. I think it'd be hard to find people who would say the church is a net positive force as it stands today.

What I see is a combination of people posting some decent takes from the pope on one single issue, and then laughing at the horrible right-wing reactions that result. The focus is on even the Catholic church outflanking almost the entire U.S. political class from the left.
