They didnt fund the creation of anime, but they did fund distribution, localization, etc.

What I want to know is what happened to the 54% that went into live-action; did any Japanese films break out in the last few years?

Godzilla Minus One is really the only thing in recent years that has broken out. It's weird that anime is such a huge part of my life, but I've seen more Bollywood films than live action Japanese films in the last 10 years (excluding old samurai films, of course).

Other than that there was the Kabuki film, not sure how well it did though
