It is also important to recognize that the US is not a reliable trading partner. It would be good if they were, but it is not good to act as if they are when they are not. It would be good for Canada and the whole world, if the US negotiated and acted in good faith and with respect for the rule of law but that doesn't make it so. Canada must realistically assess the risks and harms of relying on the US and act accordingly, including increased self-sufficiency and diversified trade relations.
