Well, we would have to make the case that the transperson was actually treated poorly. We have it sounding like she cautioned her against it and felt some amount of discomfort based on past trauma.

It also sounds like a very nominal amount of money - $200 is small beans for any kind of rent, even in subpar facilities.

I do see your point, though...

But imagine charging some poor woman in a trailer park $10k in fines after she said these things that are very tepid criticisms.

After reading the article, Weibe sounds like a jerk for suing his friend. She gave her cheap rent, seems to have paid for other expenses as well

We don't have to make that case. The case went before the tribunal and the landlord was fined for making disparaging statements to their tenant. It's also worth noting that the tenant was evicted, and that's why the complaint was filed. The tribunal did not find that the tenant was evicted because of bigotry, but did find that the text messages warranted a fine.

We don't actually know what the "tepid criticisms" were, because the content of the texts wasn't in the article.
