goes to show how extremely easy it is to get people to believe pretty much anything that reinforces their preconceived biases
see also: the ridiculous lie that the DPRK is some wacky hermit kingdom ruled by a guy that will execute you by flak gun in front of baying crowds for both having and not having the same haircut as him
It's also frustrating because it doesn't ever go in the opposite direction, people can be made to believe that the "evil enemy" are all inhuman monsters committing brutal acts of violence a dozen times a day, but no amount of evidence or just basic common sense can get them to admit that people in other countries are just regular people like them.
