For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Heretic (2024), a horror film that asks, “What if Hugh Grant was a sicko?”, and runs with that premise. Two Mormon missionary ladies go door-to-door, only to knock at the wrong house, when a deranged maniac (Grant) locks them inside his torture chamber of a house, in which he subjects them to sadistic Jigsaw-esque games to test their faith. Will no one stop this madman’s schemes? I guess we’ll find out. This is the most popular and best-reviewed work to date of director due Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who are otherwise known for the failed Adam Driver vehicle 65 (2023). This is really popular on Letterboxd, so let’s give it a whirl.

Between the features is Alice in Wonderland (1981), a 30-minute animated Soviet adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel. Looks pretty surreal and cool, and there’s a sequel to it, the two cartoons being collectively the magnum opus of animator Yefrem Pruzhanskyi.

After that is OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies (2006), a French spy farce set in 1955 and starring an off-brand James Bond (played by Jean Dujardin) in his slapstick-filled adventures in fighting Nazis and bedding attractive ladies. Matters come to a head as the spy bumbles his way through international intrigue amidst the Suez Crisis, and the subsequent tensions between France and Egypt. Director is Michel Hazanavicius, the guy better-known for the Best Picture Oscar winner The Artist (2011). French people really like this movie, and ti received great reviews so we’ll give it a shot. Apparently it’s a big piss-take/homage to the classic Bond movies.
