I wanna emphasise i'm not supporting beria, and i'm pretty sure they have found the corpses of young girls in his backyard, i just wanna share something interesting (at least imo):
Beria's archives are more locked down and inaccessible than any other soviet leader. They still havent been declassified afaik much less made accesible for study. Idk what it means, but its been stuck in my head since i read it (in On Stalin's Team by Fitzpatrick)
Was the SA stuff against Beria ever verified? Like is there a strong basis to believe it?
I’ve never looked into it really but I vaguely had the impression it was a mix of Khrushchev trashing him and anti-Soviet propaganda.
There is some story about how Stalin told his daughter “stay away from that guy” but it was told to her while Beria was in the room which strikes me more like macho man talk, “careful of that handsome rogue” type humor than an actual plea for her to avoid getting… redacted. And this story was then framed in the most negative light possible by western historians.
The way that story seemed to me to be highly framed in a twisted manner is what gave me the impression the SA claim was basically defamation.
What is the basis for believing he was a Soviet Epstein?
Stalin got super rattled when his daughter was left alone with Beria for a short amount of time. If he knew his own daughter was at risk of Beria doing something to her, despite being who she is, imagine what he knew he did to "less important" women and girls.
Isn’t that the story I just referenced though?
I read the source account of that and, from memory, it was multiple officials at a gathering, Stalin was on a terrace with his daughter when Beria approached, which is when the comment was made.
Which to me sounds like playful ribbing being framed as something nefarious.
There are also close and friendly “family pictures” of Beria with Stalin’s family which directly contradict the claim Stalin didn’t want his daughter near him. He literally invited Beria into the family home.
It also seems extremely improbable that a sex pest would target the daughter of his boss and patron, the general secretary of the communist party of the USSR. So it seems obvious that these allegations against Beria are at least in part being manufactured which makes me question them in their entirety.
Is there another account that I’m not familiar with?
I remember some comrade about 1.5 years ago shared a bunch of resources on Beria being trashed as part of Kruschevs anti-stalinism. Sadly I didn't bookmark anything :(
