For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Falling in Love Like in Movies (2023), an Indonesian romantic comedy about a screenwriter who meets up with an old high-school flame, only to find himself falling for her. He writes a movie inspired by their meeting, apparently hoping it can help him work through his real-life infatuation, but uh-oh, turns out the real woman just lost her husband and isn’t that interested in another relationship. Will love blossom anyway? I guess we’ll find out. Apparently, some humor will be involved, too. Director Yandy Laurens also did the time-loop romance Sore: A Wife from the Future (2025), which we have not yet watched. This is currently the highest-rated Indonesian film of all time on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.

After that is Uptight (1968), a thriller about black revolutionaries anticipating a race war in the wake of the Martin Luther King assassination and the ensuing riots. They stock up on as many weapons as they can, only to discover that, uh oh, a mole in in their midst, and the cops are now closing in on them. Who has betrayed the cause and sold out to The Man? Time for snitches to get some stitches. The film is an adaptation of Liam O’Flaherty’s 1925 Irish novel The Informer. Director Jules Dassin also helmed Rififi (1955) and Night and the City (1950), both of which we previously watched. This is considered one of his best films.

BONUS: We will begin the night with Shapoklyak (1974), a 19-minute Soviet stop-motion animation, and the third entry in the Cheburashka series, about the proto-Pokemon of the same name.
