For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The Adventures of Buratino (1976), a Soviet children’s fantasy that can be considered the communist answer to Pinocchio. A sentient wooden boy seeking to rescue his fellow puppets from the clutches of the evil theatre landlord Karabas-Barabas, seeking out a magic golden key that will allow him to open a portal and escape with them in tow. He meets a whole bunch of strange characters along the way. This is by far the best-known and best-regarded work of director Leonid Nechayev. A whole generation of Russians consider this a childhood classic, so we’ll give it a whirl. Great reviews all around.

After that is Ready or Not (2019), an action/black-comedy about a newlywed bride who is forced into a deadly game of hide-and-seek by her sinister, wealthy, devil-worshipping in-laws, who have decided she must die to mollify a family curse. A chase ensues as they all attempt to kill her, and she learns to be a badass and turn the tables on them. Over-the-top bloodshed follows from there Director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were also behind Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023). This one is really popular on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.
