Yeah, this is my exact problem with the data centre theory.

If you're going to keep a whole lot of incriminating data, right where everyone can see it is just about the worst place possible.

    Knowing it's there doesn't mean much if you can't access it. They aren't going to have a public terminal in the street linked to it. They can also just wipe it from their own office and it reduces chances of leaks/whistleblowing.

    Being hard wired to it and having it air gapped and only accessible from the white house itself is a huge advantage.
