It's a thing people like. Everyone knows it's staged,but it's fun.
With the masks, this seems to be Mexican Lucha libre, which can get quite crazy (like Jesus fighting midgets or something) and quite a spectacle to beholdin person. I would completely recommend you go see a show if you're ever in Mexico, great ambiance, greet fun
