I can totally imagine that this happened somewhere because of today’s problem with logi options +.

Logitech bricked my favorite headset because they pushed a firmware update without asking that failed to install. The headset was working perfectly fine, and now the receiver is bricked. Out of warranty by a few months when it happened too.

  brick()
end

And this is why consumer protection laws are so important. What if auto manufacturers did that. Warranty expired? "send the update that causes misfires or leaves the interior lights on and drains the battery"

Ford patented a system that will disable your car if you miss a loan payment, and if you continue not to pay the autonomous driving tech will drive itself back to the dealership

Agreed! Whence right to repair?

This feels like you should still be able to require them to replace or fix it. It would be like them coming into your home, accidentally stepping on it and then saying, "oops, too bad it's out of warranty." It's too bad that small claims is probably more expensive than just paying to replace it.

What the Hell could it possibly ever even need a firmware update for?! The vast majority of headsets aren't even physically capable of having firmware (because they connect using 3.5mm analog audio jacks), let alone receiving an update for it!

To communicate with the newer and significantly worse version of their desktop software, I guess :)

I have used a Logitech speakers, keyboard, and mouse for years as well. Will not buy Logitech when I have to replace those. As much as I loved the headset and the mouse (G502 lightspeed), I can't continue to use peripherals that are dependent on such awful software.
