In Lüdenscheid hat eine 95-jährige Frau am Mittag beim Abbiegen mit ihrem Auto eine Mutter und ihr sechsjähriges Kind erfasst. Möglicherweise hat die Frau Gas und Bremse verwechselt. Das Kind erlitt sehr schwere Verletzungen.

I couldn’t find any mention about it in the article, but how often do senior drivers need to retake their test in Germany?

In Germany, you can go blind and keep your car license once you have it, as long as you aren't caught causing an accident.

Only truck and bus licenses require a regular medical check that checks vision, hearing, and a couple other conditions that can lead to sudden loss of control when untreated. For drivers over 50 with an added reaction test.
