IIRC he had a call with Obama a few weeks back. Was probably told he has no future in Dem politics long-term if he doesn't do what he is told... and it appears that he said yes, despite the Dem party being incredibly unpopular rn.
The funny part is that he definitely has no future in politics at all going down this road. After being a status quo preserving figurehead of NYC for a few years, literally everyone is going to hate his fucking guts.
