The Orville season 2, episode 11 "Lasting Impressions"

Written by Seth MacFarlane, directed by Kelly Cronin.

Dr. Sherman (Tim Russ) brings a time capsule from early 21st-century Earth onboard the Orville for transport to a research facility. Among the items inside is a smartphone owned by Laura Huggins (Leighton Meester), a woman who lived in upstate New York during that time. Lieutenant Malloy takes a special interest in her and has the simulator take the data from her phone to create a simulation of what she and her life was like. What starts out as curiosity turns into an unhealthy obsession as Malloy begins neglecting duties and treating the simulation like a real person. Meanwhile, Commander Bortus and Clyden take interest in a different item from the time capsule; a pack of cigarettes.

I've read mixed reviews on this episode, but it's one of my personal favorites.

  1. Tuvok!
  2. It's a nice breather episode
  3. Any episode where Scott Grimes gets to sing is appreciated
  4. "500 cigarettes!"
  5. The whole "Leave your phone in a time capsule" aspect was interesting to me. Especially with a video message to people who won't see it until long after you're dead. It really shows how much of our lives are captured in technology we have today (both in a positive and worrying light).
  6. Grimes and Meester have great chemistry together, and even though the rest of the crew is put off by the fact Gordon is basically dating a hologram of a long dead woman, it's hard to not find it a little sweet.
  7. This is the only thing I have ever seen Leighton Meester in, but somehow I was like "is that Leighton Meester??" when she first showed up.

Definitely a solid breather episode in my book.
