Laurie Strode from the original Halloween is one of my favorite protagonists in fiction. She's relatably and realistically terrified of Michael Myers, but when the kids she's babysitting are in danger, she throws herself into harm's way to protect them, makes good use of improvised weapons (a knitting needle and a bent coathanger), and fights off Michael twice.
