The old heads remember what dubstep actually is, before Skrillex took the name and ruined everyone’s understanding of the newest genre from the UK garage/drum and bass scene. All my homies hate Skrillex.
Epic video. After watching it, I gained a newfound appreciation for dubstep while also having to admit I have no idea what it actually is.
(I still kinda like Skrillex, though.)
Not gonna lie, his return to music and most recent two albums are pretty good if you like the Fred Again style of production.
Dubstep is a hard genre to get into, aside from very few album releases (there are A LOT of singles/splits) there’s some big sonic variation. Some of the faster, more frantic tracks sound closer to Jungle, while other artists like Burial bring a lot more of the UK Bass sound, and then you’ll get a very downtempo track, or a flute as the main instrument.
It’s kind of a “I know it when I hear it” vibe lol
Ehh theres good and bad
I'm personally not a fan of brostep, but I will admit that skrillex was an early pioneer of the scene, and a lot of modern edm is shaped around that era (which is moreso around the start of mainstream edm imo). A lot of the first exposure of edm for people was through early internet culture, which a major portion was mlg memes and a lot of brostep. For me, if it wasn't for brostep, I wouldn't have color bass (one of my favorites atm along with just good ol dnb). Even brostep brought a resurgence in traditional (-ish) dubstep in the form of teardown and riddim (not much 2 step though)
Example of color bass that I like https://youtu.be/2mInwGLfEaI
