If you get really frustrated you can run your tongue around it. Your tongue is much more sensitive than your finger and will find the ledge. Gross though.
I pray I never reach this level of desperation.
Imagine spotting a coworker going down on a tape roll.
"oh look Frank's going for the tapussy again"
Hey, as long as you use more than the outer circumference length of tape at once, I'd say go ahead and use your tongue.
Also works for testing 9V batteries.
