A large portion of voters have been told their whole lives that "politicians suck, both sides are the same". So they question why bothering to vote. The sanewashing, editing of Trump to sound not insane, constantly asking primarily for Republican input by the media had really inured people to the effects and reasons. Now that things are happening to them they're hopefully waking up a bit. It took pearl harbor to get us into WWII, crashing the economy seems to be getting us fighting for at least a middle class again.
Even my local NPR gives so much airtime to Republican lies with minor if any push back by interviewers. There's rarely Democrat input except for against other Democrats.
