The admin of sh.itjust.works has been approached but as of yet has failed to reply to concerned Lemmy users. I’m glad Beehaw admins look out for us by cutting off instances that host communities like this.

I know that beehaw defederated with sh.itjust.works, but over on my instance I saw the_donald show up and I promptly blocked the community. Why not just do that?

Because when you have 10 people around a table who don't mind one nazi pulling up a chair, you have 11 nazis.

Isn't blocking the community the same thing as kicking them out of the room?

One community on an instance, the users of that instance (who partake of The_Donald, for instance) are users of all federated instances. Thus if federated they would have fun by turning every other available community into an unpleasant experience.

As a reddit example, after posting on archery and motorcycle related subs I received threatening and sexual messages. Beehaw is the first place I've seen that actively wants to avoid that from day one, and I really hope it succeeds. Being cautious over defederation has been a big plus point for me.

No, it's just saying "I won't come into your room." They can still go anywhere they want.

Maybe it's more like putting on earplugs?

I think the proper analogy here would be by you blocking the community, you turn around and ignore the nazi, while everyone else still allows the nazi. So you might frown upon the nazi, but everyone else still accepts them, so then there are still 9 people who are fine with the nazi.

You're still sitting on that table, just with some separators between you and the others. People obviously don't want to support extremistic bigots.

Because Nazis spread like cancer, if you don't shut them off and quarantine them you'll have those t_d users starting to interact with other non-nazi communities and harass others

And we should not ever have to mention this fact, but if the Nazis ever join your side.. then you are on the wrong side.

As I recall, Beehaw defederated with them because we were getting swarms of bots and spam from their instance, not because of their communities.
