The United States shut its embassy in Kyiv on Wednesday morning due to what it called the threat of a significant air attack, a day after Ukraine used American missiles to hit a target inside Russia in what Moscow described as an escalation in the war.

Can't allow any good American citizens to die in the obvious consequences of their actions.

Sounds like either:

Ukraine launched that attack without U.S. permission, and this is a genuine reaction/punishment, or
The U.S. lied to Ukraine, saying it was OK with the attack, and this is a rugpull that's setting the stage for cutting and running

I think the U.S. is too committed to drawing this war out for #2 to be the answer, so I'm guessing this is Ukraine going off-script and the U.S. brushing them back.
