They were providing a means by which you can have ad-free access with one payment to Sync's dev. Thus, you pretty much own unobstructed access to said service with no further charge.
That's unfortunately as good as it gets in today's world, unless you want to keep using CDs and DVDs like it's 2004. Your call.
