You'd be surprised at how often that doesn't protect people.

You start on pills, smoking or snorting, but then tolerance grows and your money dries up. Your fear of needles gets rapidly outweighed by your tolerance and withdrawal. Shooting it is much more cost effective, especially with powder heroin that doesn't smoke well.I never met a single person who started shooting it. I started because one time I hustled all day to get money for some, snorted it all and only felt less bad.
I started by shooting it. I hate things up my nose. The burning and all that, I'm just very sensitive there. And I'm not the only one. Admittedly, some of those people I turned on with the needle first and I'll have to live with that the rest of my life.
Clean 14+ years now at least.
