But they sure do have a culture of sexualizing pre-pubescent girls and then making some weird excuse as to why it's okay!
I say this as an avid fan of Anime; but I sometimes have to quit shows over it.
For sure. America too tho.
Really? Because other than weird outliers like Cutie or whatever, that's not really a thing in American culture; at least not in public media. The clergy is another story altogether! Like sure, there's plenty of sexualizing 16 and up; but japan is shameless about it, these girls look 10-12 half of the time. They only JUST raised the age of consent from age 13 to age 16. It was the lowest in the world just prior.
It's just a weird culture overall - everyone being shamed into looking exactly the same, insane emphasis on working so hard you keel over from it, etc.
Beauty pageants?
That's not really a popular thing in America. Especially for younger girls.
Oh yeah so it's not like a nationwide thing that constantly goes on in every single city and state in America or anything.
Oh wait, it is. Beauty pageants are fucking everywhere my friend.
And also, if you want to talk about dealing with the people that sexually assault underage people, you should start with the major players first and then work your way down.
You can start with the Catholic Church and then all of the other churches, for instance. There's your hot spot, a location where men are given an inordinate amount of power and respect and authority within very small and insular communities without any direct oversight.
Pedos love that shit.
Yeah, you're right. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Beauty_pageants_in_the_United_States -- Here's all of them. They fit on a single page. Most of them stopped completely after the pandemic. They aren't something watched by millions on TV, or attended in droves; so in comparison -- yeah. Across the whole of the USA; they're popular in some deep red states -- Kentucky and the like, and like 2 companies try to push them; but they are largely a BLIP in America's cultural significance.
Meanwhile, in easily half of this seasons Anime; I could show you bits where they're pushing incest, or sexualizing minors. There is a HUGE difference in the acceptability of that shit when it comes to Japan. They're moving in the right direction, and curtailing it - but it doesn't even compare.
(adding to your point) By the names alone, the vast majority of those are for adults. So not only are they wrong about the popularity of pageants, they're wrong to imply pageants are an example the US sexualizing adolescents
That is not even close to all of them. Every county in every state has a Miss ___ County which go on to the state fair to be the Miss for the whole state. They are often teenagers. There is also usually a "Junior Miss" category for younger teens or even pre-teens.
Where I live, there is a county pageant and a city pageant. Neither are on that page.
Believe it or not, Wikipedia lists are not necessarily comprehensive.
This shit stopped ages ago. Dunno what bumfuck state you live in that still does these, but it's not as widespread as you purport.
That is just a lie. And no matter what "bumfuck" state I live in, it means that there are dozens of beauty contests that are not listed on Wikipedia.
Here are several examples of states which do this, none of which I live in:
https://www.wilsoncountytnstatefair.com/p/competitions-exhibits/wilson-county-residents/pageants/fairest-of-the-fair
https://waynecountyfair-wv.com/pageant/
https://www.buttecountyfair.org/fair-2024/miss-butte-county
https://waynecountyfair.org/pageant-history/
But sure, California and New York are definitely "bumfuck" states.
Literally every place you linked, is out in the middle of countryville, nowhere (pop < 5k). Just because some small town of hillbillys are doing it, does not mean it is popular or widespread.
One of them is literally a link to the state fair. You clearly didn't even look.
You're also so busy being a snob that you haven't actually shown any evidence of this beyond "they're not listed on Wikipedia" as if that's some sort of proof. Considering I showed you four examples not listed on Wikipedia, including one for a state with a population of 7 million people, you're simply wrong.
If this doesn't convince you, nothing will: https://i.imgur.com/nf8QKhR.png
EXISTING does not mean popularity. Popularity, means a majority of people participate, watch, or enjoy said thing.
Beauty Pageants are a NICHE. Most people don't give a flying fuck about them. They are not a common pass-time of the American consumer.
Even better -- here's a nice COMPARISON to the search term for "Grill"; a nice neutral term that should show you: https://i.imgur.com/b1dL7mv.png
Holy fuck - It should not be this difficult to get such a simple fucking concept through your thick skull.
Me:
You:
You can insult me all you like, but you were still wrong.
But do tell me what enlightened place you live in that has no local beauty contest. I sincerely doubt where you live doesn't have one.
I just picked a county in my state; Taylor, Florida - they don't have beauty pageants. There.
Just from a random pick, I've managed to find one. You claim "every county in every state"... well, there's a state, and a county...and I didn't even try.
Go ahead. Dig those heels in. Get even more pedantic about previous conversation. Where are you gonna move the goalposts this time, big guy?
Sorry... you just complained about me picking things in the middle of nowhere and you picked a county with a population of 21,796?
Oh hey, look at that, it still has one: https://www.facebook.com/misstaylorcounty/
These are this year's winners. Some of them look quite young.
You didn't look very hard.
You seriously tried telling me that your amazingly enlightened state of Florida (LO fucking L) doesn't have a lot of beauty pageants?
Fine then, try Dixie, FL -- I don't have access to Facebook, I quit that shit long ago. I didn't find one for Taylor County when I searched.
Dude, your own example was wrong. I'm not going to go through every county you pick to see whether or not you are right this time. If you can't admit you're wrong, fine, but don't keep wasting my time by not even admitting you're wrong with your own example before moving on.
But fine, I'll prove you wrong twice. I'm sure you still won't just admit you're wrong.
https://www.facebook.com/miss.dixie.pageant/
That's fine, I'll keep trying - because an absolute statement like "Every County in Every State has them" is just not something I can believe. I told you they weren't popular, I've proven that. I told you that it stopped ages ago; I've proven that. But if you're going to make me disprove your absolute statement, then I'm up for it.
And now you're just lying. This is what you said:
You said nothing about popularity. You were wrong with both of your examples and you clearly didn't even bother checking to find out whether or not you'd be wrong because it took me seconds of Googling to find out.
People who can never admit they're wrong even when it has been shown that they are absolutely wrong are not worth my time. I can't abhor arrogance on a Donald Trump level.
Meanwhile, this is all over me pointing out that more than half of Anime features sexualization of minors. Not dress-up contests, but actual upskirt shots and shit... and you're over here absolutely losing your mind over beauty pageants.
What the hell did you think "it's not as widespread as you purport" means? You've linked me pages with at most a couple hundred followers; I've proven that nobody follows this shit. Of COURSE there are going to be grandmas and other dipshits that still want them to go on. I'm sorry that you've got a problem with your self image, I know arrogance is difficult to overcome, but I'm willing to work with you on it. Nobody goes to these things. Nobody participates in this shit. You've been linking me shit from facebook where like 10 people organized a thing and you're claiming it's everywhere like wildfire. I don't know how to get it through your head that it's just simply not a thing in America that people care about.
Additionally, it seems like suburban Americans love making these pedo accusations while pretending the US isnβt a hotspot for global pedophilia.
Like, have these people ever even seen a Japanese middle school? Look at those kids and tell me unironically theyβre being sexualized.
Yes itβs still weird as hell to sexualize kids in media. Gee I wonder where they picked up that habit from as a colony of the West.
American 12 year olds regularly walk around in crop tops and βleggingsβ and a kid canβt walk 100 feet in America without being sexually harassed by old men.
Just more typical βx is bad in bad country, but good in good countryβ rhetoric from the right and liberals. Oh look they united again, I just canβt stop seeing it happen for some reason.
I'm not saying America doesn't have these problems. I'm saying America doesn't put these things so directly in the media that you actively have to avoid it.
violence on the other hand, is a whole different story. You wanna avoid acts of violence in American media? You practically can't.
The majority of anime is not made for Japan's general domestic market. There are niches in Japanese society who consume weird anime, but it's not like your everyday normal business dude is watching them.
That's just because they've lived in what is essentially a defanged fascist government since the end of WW2. During the Meiji restoration they basically destroyed their own culture and reinvented themselves as empirical conquerors. Unlike Germany after ww2 the empirical ruling class wasn't prevented from participating in government, so they've basically had a long line of war criminals followed by the children of war criminals controlling the government since.
https://animehunch.com/uns-cybersecurity-draft-excludes-anime-manga-from-censorship-of-content-involving-children/
Then why are entire treaties being drafted specifically to exclude anime from underage sexual content enforcement?
I'm sure some people are a bit knee-jerk in the reaction to my claim, but...it's legitimately a problem.
I don't see how that conflicts with anything I said? The UN drafting importation legislation doesn't really have anything to do with Japan's domestic consumption.
It just means Japan is protecting one of its largest exports and the UN is keen to protect diplomatic relations and commerce.
Yes, really.
You know a bunch of Southern states are trying to lower the marriage age, right?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_age_in_the_United_States#/media/File:US_map_-_age_of_marriage.svg
It's 18 basically everywhere.
This article disagrees. https://www.newsweek.com/child-marriage-ban-state-map-virginia-law-1888471
You said a bunch of southern states are trying to LOWER the marriage age. You still haven't posted any proof of that claim. And - what your article is about doesn't even disagree with my statement. There's a grand total of...4 states that have loopholes for marriage under the age of 16. It's only ever under the age of 16 in the cases of emancipated minors, court orders, and they generally have an age window that's acceptable -- usually 3 years.

I can find more if you want. Republicans, many in southern or red states, are actively standing in the way of child marriage bans, and some are calling to lower the age.
But you too could have googled that.
First off, you made the claim. It's not my prerogative to confirm your claims for you.
First link: Bill dead.
Second link: HB0007 passed, limiting marriage age.
Third Link: In 2018 Missouri passed a law increasing the minimum age. I can't seem to find a bill here that actually has the wording; though the article does claim a politician said he knew 12 year olds that had gotten married and were still married.
Fourth Link, again Missouri -- again, an age window of acceptance for 16-17 yr olds.
Fifth Link West Virginia -- again, age window of acceptance for 16-17 year olds, only fight here is raising it to 18.
So...yeah, a lot of these are sensationalized; from reading the bills I could find ; WHEN I could even find them. Other than the third link, and that guy is sick in the head. So none of the states were trying to lower minimum age; some random Republicans were.
Do give us an acceptable reason for a 16-year-old to marry.
I married my first wife when she was 16 and I was 18 to get her out of the foster care system and out of an abusive household where she was getting beat nearly to death daily.
I'm not saying that should justify allowing 16 year olds to marry, but these marriages at 16 usually are only allowed due to exceptions -- in most cases, they still require a court order or parental consent.
First of all, I don't believe that for a minute. That is what CPS is for.
Secondly, that does not even come close to justifying letting 16-year-olds marry. That's a reason that the foster system needs to be reformed, not that child marriage is a good idea.
I don't give a fuck if you believe me or not, CPS does not give a flying fuck about people in the foster care system. My ex-wife got raped twice while in the foster system after people like you told her that CPS would be better. Sure, she was not getting beat to death (figuratively; I have a feeling you're gonna be pedantic about that phrase), but she was at least used to that part...
Then, again, the argument should be to reform the foster system, and not maintain the child marriage system, which also facilitates rape.
I'm NOT ARGUING FOR child marriages! You told me to give you a reason, so I did. The original poster above said states were trying to lower ages; they aren't! The national minimum age is steadily rising. Some dipshit republicans in some states argued against it - that doesn't mean that "states are lowering the age" as claimed.
Any anime or manga that sexualizes young children are also weird outliers, yet they're being treated as the norm?
When they're more than half of what is produced in that sphere...they are no longer an outlier.
You're 100% right, but you're still gonna get downvoted because weebs gonna weeb.
More like because it's not remotely relevant to the subject.
That's fair.
