While this isn't really important, but the author of this piece is Martin Sieff, who I did not know until you made this comment. Here's are short bios of him:

Basically he is from Northern Ireland, studied in British universities, worked in US media, connected to Russia, contributes to Chinese media. I think all this background information is too much for some to process.
