And given that he was attacked from behind, its unlikely the attacker knew him. Just some guy lashing out randomly for who even knows what reason. I wonder how often this must happen to non-famous people that don’t make the news too. NYC has one of the highest police budget's per-capita in the world and Manhattan is one of the most densely surveilled places in the country.
