They want to make sure all the Palestinians stay in Palestine because next week is Palestine's birthday and Isreal is throwing a huge surprise party! There's enough cake and pizza for everyone - they hope everyone is coming hungry! /s

I believe It's the last area on the surface they haven't cleared of Hamas yet. Rockets have been fired from Rafah.

I’d imagine they want to investigate and destroy any tunnel exits that come in from Sinai. Fully expect them to do so by leveling much of the city, but I have read that a lot of Hamas smuggling comes through the southern border of Gaza.
