See, it's democratic as long as people vote for their candidate of choice. Only one candidate? Well, you voted for them at least.
Also, I'm curious why this hasn't been an issue in the past. Is it Ohio changing the deadline, or the DNC being moved later in the year?
The DNC has been later in August in the past, according to this page on wikipedia. Same goes for the RNC.
But I don't know if Ohio's law has always been this way or if it's newer. Either way, it sounds like in the past that various states have had provisions for this scenario, knowing that this could and did happen. So if I had to guess, the issue is that, like many things in our political system, we relied on traditions and cooperation to maintain the system. And of course, Republicans for the last 8yrs (longer than that, really) no longer want to do that. They'd rather see it all burn down in the name of DJT.
Likely it is a revenge move because a couple of states booted Trump.
But weren't those canceled by Supreme Court?
Yes, but one consistent thing from Republicans is retaliation/revenge. Right out of the Fascist playbook.
I mean, yeah, but why would the Republicans lift theirs...
Historically, when a political party’s nominating convention occurs after a state deadline for certifying nominees, states have either enacted laws to push back the deadline – as Ohio did in 2012 and 2020 – or accepted a provisional certification from the party.
This Allen guy is brand new and does not appear to understand the law he's sworn to uphold.
