Each separate post is a whole RPG world to itself. Consider each thread like a one-shot RPG. Post a premise, some (preferably quick) rules and supply a prompt and then play! Experiment with weird, quirky, non-traditional RPG designs, do freeform and crazy non-sequitur improv. But above all else: HAVE FUN!

Okay! Time for a new freeform game using the Everyone is John rules. Since I don't like the connotation of gamifying mental illness, in this context John will be possessed by various entities (your choice of ghost, demon, aliens, Cthulhu, etc) as the "voices" in John's head.

Creating a Character:

Come up with a crazy entity to possess/telepathically command/transmit suggestive ideas to John. Make it something cool like a Reptilian Shadow Warrior from Merrix IV, or Sumerian Trickster God. Come up with a short, but descriptive backstory to give your Voice some flavor.

You'll have these three attributes:

Willpower: This is a pool of points used to control John and improve your chance of success in taking an action. This starts a 10 pts. It will go up and down as the game progresses.

Skills:These are specialized things you can do in-game. "Damn Good Driver", "Strong Like an Ox", "Silver-Tongued Devil". You get two of these, three if you decide to start with 7 Willpower instead of 10.

Obsession: Your obsession is the game's winning condition. At the end of the game, after everyone runs out of willpower, you'll tally up every time you fulfilled one of your obsessions (if someone else does something that fulfills one of your obsessions you count that too). Obsessions come in three levels:

Level 1: Easy to do things

Gorging on Junkfood, Jaywalking, Yelling Loudly Indoors, Smashing Ketchup Packets on your Head.

Level 2: Moderate difficulty things

Sneaking Into a Private Club, Convincing a Stranger to Give you Their Pants, Running a Marathon in High-Heels.

Level 3: The nearly impossible

Blowing Things Up, Stealing a Fighter Jet, Ransoming a Kidnapped Soccer Team, Hijacking a Nuclear Sub.

How to Play:

The game begins with John waking up and one of the voices taking control. You bid any amount of your current Willpower, high bid wins. All of you will PM me a bid (to keep it secret from everyone else) and whoever wins will take control of John initially. It'll then be up to you to steer John towards completing your obsessions to rack up points for winning the game after everyone's Willpower is depleted.

To accomplish actions you'll roll a d6. If you have a relevant skill to accomplish your actions Roll 3 or Higher to Succeed, if not Roll a 6 to Succeed. To effect the outcome of the roll You Can Spend Willpower to Add a Point to Your Roll, this can make a success automatic if enough Willpower is spent.

Whenever John gets hurt, wakes up, a voice fails a roll or completes an obsession a test of control will occur.

Everyone will bid for control, the person who currently had control could win the bid again to keep control. You aren't required to bid, and can claim you are bidding to fake out your competing voices. The voice who wins the bid loses the Willpower they bid, everyone else keeps their Willpower they bid.

To Start:

Make a post below detailing who your Voice will be (Alien, Demon, Malevolent A.I., etc...get creative with your character!) with their Skills and current Willpower. DM me your Obsessions so you can keep them secret from the other players, and also let me know your initial Willpower bid to take control of John first.

After you've all posted, and I've received the initial bids for control of John, I'll narrate the first scenario and play will begin with the player who won the first bid.

SO: EVERYONE, LET'S POSSESS JOHN!!!

I like to collect and occasionally play fun, quirky and rules-lite RPGs. I thought I might share some that I've enjoyed reading or playing over the years with this community. I've linked my Google drive collection here. Hopefully this can be a good resource for people looking to play in this community or elsewhere!

Some of my favorites include:
Honey Heist
Lasers and Feelings
Pride and Extreme Prejudice
Adventure Skeletons

I'd love to hear some recommendations for any that I should add!

This is a swashbuckling superhero comedy scfi adventure.

Inspiration: The Tick, Megaton Man, Any other superhero parody

In this world:

  • Superheroes are ridiculous buffoons with quirky powers (Cactus Man, Ice Cream Sundae Avenger, Papercut Pete)

  • Villains are equally as silly and generally pathetic (Taking over the local Sears, turning everyone into teddy bears, writing their name on the moon)

  • Whenever a hero or villian does something they succeed, it's not exactly how they intend it to succeed (Papercute Pete tries giving a henchman a papercut to drop their weapon, but the henchman instead becomes a blubbering mess because he can't stand even the smallest amount of blood)

  • The world is incredibly fragile, buildings topple when barely impacted, cars crumple at the slightest touch, things break in spectacular fashion, natural and man-made disasters occur frequently and with devastating force.

You are a team of stupid superheroes seeking to stop The Big Squeeker from turning the city into squeaky pet toys. Already many citizens and the local police have been turned into various squeaky toys, squeaking incessantly, driving everyone batty.

Right now, the team is fighting a giant squeaky robot that is knocking over buildings and causing havoc downtown.

If you can defeat the robot it will reveal the location of the squeaky ray which is transforming the citizens into squeaky toys.

Character Creation:

  • What weird power do you have that nobody else can do?
  • What is your biggest fear?
  • What crippling flaw do you have?
  • What do people call you?
  • What do you look like?

To accomplish an action:

Roll the dice and tell me a reason why you succeed, for each acceptable reason I'll add one to your result. If you can come up with 3 or more acceptable reasons, you succeed automatically. Otherwise, roll a D6 and add 1 for each acceptable reason.

  • 6 or more: You succeed cleanly.
  • 5: You succeed at a steep cost.
  • 4 or less: You fail and things go badly for you.

Failure: Each failed roll you'll take a condition. Each condition weakens future rolls by one.

To Roll: Use the free dice roller by /u/starlord@lemm.ee linked here: https://tinyurl.com/everypostroll

Be sure to add your character's name and the action they are taking in the roll dialogue. Then copy the link generated to your post. For each roll copy the roll of the person who last rolled, so we can keep our rolls in the same history together.
