What's your best software? (opensourcereviews.github.io)
submitted 2 months ago by sysop@lemmy.world to c/technology@lemmy.world

Looking for the best software stacks on my new Linux setups one for HTPC (running Kodi on Fedora KDE Plasma) I'm more focused on data security to store keys, passwords, and software outside of the mainstream software like FreeTube (https://freetubeapp.io/)

Where I can save the content I want for later/offline to store underground music stuff. Exploring all the software out there has been fun.

What software setups are you guys running?

For self-hosting, be mindful IP addresses have reputation scores and your IP needs to build them up positively. You need to have reverse DNS set, DKIM, SPF records etc for a more trusted reputation, domain reputation etc to not be flagged and sent to spam folders. I just got the $1/month Proton E-Mail for 10 addresses for 1 custom domain as I didn't feel like dealing with any of this with self hosting, but props for going the self-hosting route.

The internet is boring. All the good stuff is buried in the search engines. I found: https://kagi.com/smallweb which is worth a browse. Submit your cool websites/blogs here in a comment and share some underground web. In the name of fun.

Should have right clicked and hit 'inspect element' and changed it from 20 to 32487839423 then entered it. Bet it would have worked because, you know HTML hackers.

No no no, you want Linux desktop. Install Oracle VirtualBox and play with the different linux desktop distros and find the right one that's best for you. It's fun. It's not filled with spyware and adware and isn't bloated with Microsoft's crazy antics. And, it's free. Once it's installed check out this: https://github.com/tycrek/degoogle to de-herpes your internet experience and 👍

Yess yesssss let the linux flow throughhhh youuuuuuu. Manjaro XFCE here. Play with the distros in Oracle Virtual Machines and find the right one for you. Linux desktop is seriously worth the effort. Check out Yakuake as a Quake style drop down terminal to get to hacky stuff. Learn everything about Linux. It's fun!

That's unfortunately just how the internet is/works. It's all links and links to each other. Check out https://archive.is and https://archive.ph - Maybe we can build a decentralized archive thing based on IPFS or something

Absolutely not our problem. They can come up with other business models. Maybe they can resurrect one of the hundreds of projects/business models from them at https://killedbygoogle.com/ and run with that

[-] sysop@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

Not our problem. They can go the twitch.tv'ish way and add subscription models for people to subscribe and support their favorite content producers and Youtube can take a cut.

Just because they can't think of a profitable business model other than annoying and exploiting the internet's userbase while deplatforming, demonetizing and having their own myriad of problems doesn't mean that's on us.

Doesn't mean you're simping. You have a valid point, but when's enough enough when they're squeezing everything out of us for ad revenue and finding new ways to fuck with our psyche/psychological things like Facebook does with its highest paid employee(s) to rake in attention for cost-per-click and cost-per-view? We're more than just 'metrics' and KPIS. We're humans, we deserve joy. If youtube dies, there's decentralized solutions out there that can become more mainstream. People can self-host and host their own content.

Agreed. It's a form of cyber terrorism and needs to have an end put to it.
