I run backups to a USB drive which is way to grab in the event of an emergency. Just make sure you test them every more and again, and possibly only connect it when needed if you're at all worried about malware (a cryptolocker will happily take out any attached storage if your machine is infected).
It's cool that you were invited. Also ironic that you chose to make the "politics" community here all about USA and now level accusations of gatekeepering?
Maybe it doesn't feel like a big deal to you, but I think it's reasonable for Canadians to feel concerned that foreign content/news tends to overshadow our own, especially given how the USGov is treating foreign relations these days.
American corps already run a lot of news outlets here, dominate the entertainment industry, and have no qualms about throwing their weight around. Lemmy was looking like a place for other countries such a Canada to maybe have a bit of space for our own news and content while still being connected to the world, but it didn't take long for feeds to be overwhelmed here too.
A little room to breathe or at least maybe some consideration of where this community "lives" doesn't feel like a lot to ask. If you consider that a "diatribe" and want to toss your weight around that's not much I can do to stop you, but it also kinda proves my point.
Correction, Canadian instance.
sh.itjust.works is Canadian.
So I guess a better question might be: why did you join a Canadian instance to create a generically named community about American politics?
Did you think "gee, sh.itjustworks is a funny name, I'm going to sign up there", was it more a land-grab for a high-level keyword "politics" as a community, instead of creating it as "uspolitics" or "americanpolitics". Or maybe you just assumed American politics were the one that mattered most, even on a non-American instance?
Whatever your reasoning, now Canadians who signed up for this Canadian instance see your American news in their feed under the "politics" heading. It's not even "American politics relevant to Canadians"
Not really a great look.
You know what's worse than pulling things off the shelves? Threatening the sovereignty of foreign nations and then making up bullshit tariffs to do so
Fun thing, if you don't sort by "Prime" you'll often find that there's another one of the exact item you're looking for - without Prime - but actually for a lower price. The Prime isn't actually free shipping, it's just baked into the price
Honestly, people have been ringing warning bells for a while regarding how Amazon facilitates illegal behavior, including:
-
Products like this whose purpose is obviously got illegal purposes and even described as such
-
Counterfeit/knockoff goods
-
Unsafe and/or not adhering to legal regulations in the country which they are being sold (sometimes often faking the certification logos)
As somebody who has dealt with the latter two, I hope this lawsuit puts on enough hurt and/or spawns similar suits so that Amazon cleans their shit up. It's enough advantage that they don't need to stock local stores without them being able to constantly thumb their nose at the regulations actual B&M stores need to adhere to
Honestly, I doubt this was even AI. I know it's he buzzword of the month but it's just as easy for some asshole to do with Photoshop
Also, the iFrame is particularly asshole'ish in that the original author's site is still out the bandwidth for content, but somebody else is making money off it.
I fully support his response. Personally, I'd love to see the same done to certain scraper-bots
- Login as a user.
- Delete the user while still logged in
- Run command
You should get a message "you don't exist, go away"
Not sure if that one is still around but I know one person who ran a script with "deluser $USER" and it ate root resulting in fun messages like that
This initially sounded like they were forcing users to their history under the guise of providing suggestions, however it really just means "no history, no suggestions"
I'm ok with this

I realize this is sarcasm but honestly: all of you/us are greater than all of them, if enough of us can actually unite on what we want and how to get it.
Unfortunately it's also why there's been a huge effort on dividing people by race/gender/religion/etc that might otherwise have been united in socio-economic struggles.
It also means that the people who need to give something to push for change are (deliberately) kept in situations where they have the least to do.
Which is why supporting community/network is important.
Having a politician that isn't an evil fuck is good, but that politician isn't going to watch your kids while you're at a protest or in the hospital. They're not going to help you get to work when your car breaks down, or help you fix it.
They might stand beside you at a protest or union meeting, but one or a handful of politicians says less than community of hundreds or thousands.
We need to rebuild communities and support networks. Yes we need the help of politicians - or at least less actively fighting against us - but we also need to rally with each other. The attacks on this guy reflect much of the same as those on our communities.
If somebody is a "gay Muslim trans-woman Iranian refugee amputee" who is willing to stand by me in times of need, I'm willing to stand by them and they're welcome at my BBQ.
